But is it scary without that? Yes, it resoundingly is so. Aside from some ill-conceived but blissfully brief moments where an apparition chases you around, there’s no sense of physical danger in the game. In a sense Layers of Fear 2 is one very brave horror game in that it lacks the physical sadism of more base horror films. Overall, this felt much more misguided than the original, which is heartbreaking.Related reading: Lindsay’s review of the original Layers of Fear Its clearer path towards endings makes sense considering the narrative, and it has moments of intrigue, but these islands are few and far between in an ocean of clunky gameplay and an underwhelming atmosphere. There were so many moments where I felt "I could be experiencing the original again", which is an underwhelming sentiment for a sequel to provide. Its jumpscares fall flat as there's less buildup than was present in the original, and it comes off feeling forced and cheaper as a result. Any unnerving energy present in the first has been traded in for instakill chase scenes, which matters even less considering the abundance of checkpoints. Its atmosphere, while having the potential to be compelling, has much to be desired. Its atmosphere, while having the Honestly? I was kind of let down by this game, doubly so coming fresh off the heels of the original. Honestly? I was kind of let down by this game, doubly so coming fresh off the heels of the original. The truth is what you believe it is and what makes more sense to YOU. Don't be so hard on trying to figure out everything on the story. This is not totally equal to the first one, so take your time to put the pieces of the story together and play more than once. So my advice is: - This is not a game for everyone. I already started my 3rd playthrough as I said before, and I am really enjoying the game a lot more than when I played it for the first time. Now I am loving the game just as I loved the first one. That was the point when I felt that this really was something that came out from Bloober Team's minds. Then I started to play a second time and every detail was making way more sense this time. I felt like the game was finally taking form in my mind. And this was the part when the fun began. But then I just took some time to think about the game and writed down some ideas about what I saw in it. That's because this time Bloober was more ambitious and experimented a major variety of ambiences and a even more abstract aproach to the storytelling. The first time I finished this game I felt a bit disappointed. Just as the name says, the experience is made by more than one layer, and the more times you play it more you discover and it makes more sense. To enjoy it you need to have patience, to pay attention to every detail, to take your time, and to play it more than once. To fully enjoy you need to have in mind that this is a game very different than any other game out there. It is a game that you need to experience for yourself. Layers of Fear is a very personal experience, so the best advice I can give is that you don't take in account the opinion of others. I've played this game 2 times and I am now on my 3rd playthrough, and FOR ME Layers of Fear 2 is a masterpiece just like the first one was.
